The Dog Days

January 14, 2012

One night, amidst some serious insomnia, I made a comment to a friend on Twitter about feeling like hell. It wasn’t the first time that month. It was more like the fourth or fifth.

A few seconds later, I received a private message from a gentleman I’ve never met – a man whom I’ve only actually conversed with via my TweetDeck.

It would be fair to say he doesn’t really know me that well (despite the fact that I share – a lot). If you think about it, it would be fair to say he doesn’t really know me at all. At least not “in real life.”

That being said, this is what his direct message said…

“You feel like hell too often. I wish I could change that, but I know only you can. Make 2012 count, friend.”

Greg, this blog post – MY FIRST BLOG POST EVER – is for you. I’ve been trying to write something witty and charming for months. I wanted my first post to be epic. I wanted my friends to pee their pants. I feel like I’m that funny. At least I can be, when I’m not publicly wishing I could fall asleep. It wasn’t until you, Greg, sent me that message that I decided I would just own this sappy side of me. So my first post probably won’t make you urinate. Perhaps my next one will. All jokes aside, a proud part of me wishes my currently loose grip on my @#$% wasn’t so obvious. And the rest of me, well…the rest of me doesn’t know (or care) how you knew I needed you at that precise moment in time, but I did. Thank you, again. You have no idea how long it has taken me to “blog.” And for a girl who loves to write, that makes the opposite of sense. It is only because of friends like you that these words are finally finding their way out into the abyss (because at this point, I’m pretty sure no one is reading my blog except for my mother, but I’m ok with that…I’m still not convinced it’s even going to be that good).

On a separate, sarcastic, side note – I promise my second blog post will be about something awesome like cellulite or stretch marks. The dog days have been so depressing. Bleh.

I’m really proud of you. I can’t wait to get my daily dose of Natalie. (As if your daily text messages aren’t enough…)

If you ever talk about me on here, it better at least be prefaced with, “My gorgeous friend Lesley.” Deal?

I’m also really happy I’m the FIRST to comment! YESSSSSSS.

Darn, I wanted to pop your blog comment cherry. Is that appropriate?? Your mom isn’t going to read the comments too, is she?

Proud smile on my face right now. Thank you for giving me an opportunity to participate in your growth. I appreciate you and I’m excited to follow your journey.

Welcome to the world of blogging. I can’t wait to read more from you. You’re right… you are a good writer, and congrats for jumping into the abyss…. I remember how scared I was the first post in. Cheers! From one only child to another. 🙂

Natalie January 19, 2012 at 8:51 pm

I honestly cannot thank you enough for reading and for the encouragement. This whole process has been so frightening. I have no idea why. But here we are. Looking forward to many more chats. 😉

Tim January 15, 2012 at 2:17 am

Good luck! I look forward to reading your posts. I can already tell they will be entertaining.

Natalie January 19, 2012 at 8:50 pm

Thank you Tim! I am so flattered (and a little floored) by these comments…especially the non-obligatory ones (although I do sincerely appreciate my mother’s support).

Tami -- Teacher Goes Back to School January 15, 2012 at 4:41 am

Oh sleep…. why you gotta be so elusive? As a lifelong insomnia sufferer, I hear you. Having a baby doesn’t help that in case you are wondering.

Hoping you find your sleep mojo and I am looking forward to pants-peeing-posts from you in the future.

No pressure.

Natalie January 19, 2012 at 8:49 pm

Thank you so much for reading Tami. And sorry about the delayed response. I am literally just learning how to use WordPress. LOL.

Vicky January 15, 2012 at 4:42 am

I’m not your mom either but I think you’re pretty funny. Looking forward to peeing my pants during your next blog post.

Matt Cheuvront January 15, 2012 at 12:30 pm

It took us a while to get here, but now we’re here. Feels good, don’t it? I’m looking forward to being a part of this magnificent journey, and I expect at LEAST one post dedicated to me. Cheers!

Peggy Seitzinger January 16, 2012 at 6:06 pm

I was hoping that as the world’s greatest cousin I might get a mention Behind The Bangs, however, I will settle for some sentimental posts that are dedicated to me. Great job Nat, can’t wait to see what happens next!

Nick January 17, 2012 at 5:11 pm

Hmmm. I think this is going to be pretty good. 🙂 Out of clutter, find simplicity. From discord, find harmony. In the middle of difficulty (insomnia) lies opportunity…

Sommer DellaBitta January 18, 2012 at 3:47 am

This suites you well. The benefits of blogging and the utter truth will make its debut each day. I look forward to keeping in the loop.
